Workshops

We conduct an annual User Training Workshop to demonstrate the capabilities and new opportunities for experimental research in earthquake engineering to potential users. The workshops provide detailed information on how to develop research programs utilizing the facilities. Participants include researchers, academicians, graduate and undergraduate students from different geographic regions of the country, and various stakeholders in natural disaster mitigation. The workshops focus on how the LHPOST6 can advance research in earthquake engineering. 

The workshops provide an opportunity for interested stakeholders to network and find affinity research groups that can potentially make use of the facilities. Experts in the earthquake engineering fields and researchers who have used the LHPOST6 in the past have given keynote presentations to share their experience and research findings. 

The workshops are typically two days and include tours of the laboratory and lectures that cover topics such as recommendations for specimen design and construction, loading protocols, instrumentation and sensors, telepresence capabilities, project management best practices for large-scale projects, and proposal planning and budgeting. 

Young researchers are encouraged to participate.

The LHPOST6 hosts workshops that bring together representatives from governmental and industrial organizations and private companies, and perspective research sponsors. These workshops are designed to promote academia-industry collaborations and identify high priority research needs, disseminate information on the use of the LHPOST6 to conduct state-of-the-art research and experimentation in natural hazards mitigation, identify and formulate grand challenge research needs to advance the science, technology and practice in earthquake disaster mitigation and prevention and to improve seismic design codes and standards, and brainstorm on example uses of the facility.

We support and collaborate in a wide variety of NHERI workshops, including:

• NHERI Summer Institute: The NHERI Summer Institute targets early-career faculty, NHERI Graduate Student Council, K-12 educators, engineers, and researchers to learn more about the NHERI community. During the three-day Institute, participants have opportunities to meet with NHERI site representatives, K-12 teachers, NSF CAREER Awardees, and a program director from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This creates a platform to discuss research grant proposal ideas and potential partnerships. UC San Diego participation will consist of presentations by the LHPOST6 PI on the capabilities of the facility, conducting office hours with potential researchers interested in using the LHPOST6, and discussions with the broader community on potential research collaborations that may use the facility.

Community Workshops

Community workshops and webinars will be hosted to highlight the projects conducted at the LHPOST6. Targeted participants include members from local professional chapters of ASCE, ACI, SEAOSD and EERI, and membership from societies that promote diversity, including SHPE, SWE, and NSBE. Presentations by the researchers will be recorded and made available to the broader NHERI community.
